Following are items from this coming Sunday’s bulletin and announcements:
Welcome Back! Everyone Is Invited To Come Join Us For The Fall Round–Up On Sept. 12! We’ll kick off our new church year on September 12 with a Fall Round Up full of fellowship, families, food, and fun. After the 10am service, you’re invited to join us for some fellowship on The Green, to visit and catch up with friends, learn more about ways to be involved at church, watch the kids play games, make crafts, and hang out with everyone. We’ll have a full free lunch for everyone, with ice cold drinks to help you stay cool, and a great setting to catch up with friends. All are invited to this annual event! If you’d like to assist in any way, from setting up for lunch to filling bags of popcorn to organizing and helping with a game, please contact Debbie Lisk at 480.585.9448 or using the staff e–mail page, or Amy Dahlby at aspence1@cox.net.
PPC Committee Heads, Group Coordinators, And Event Planners – Please join us on Sunday, Sept. 12 for our Fall Round–Up at 11am. As part of this celebration we would like to ask your group, event or activity to join us. This is a wonderful way for our members and guests to have a meet and greet or simply sign up with a representative from your group. If you’d like to have a table or display, and want to share the word with others, please contact Amy Dahlby at aspence1@cox.net, Kristin Willett or Debbie Lisk using the staff e–mail page.
Curtains Rise for ‘Godspell’ on Sept. 19 – Our youth choirs, under the direction of Kira Rugen, will be giving a special performance of the musical “Godspell” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Sanctuary. “Godspell” is a musical based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew. The performance is free and open to all (a love offering will be taken to help defray expenses). Our youth have been rehearsing diligently two days a week and are excited to present this monumental work to our church and the community. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to this special performance.
Join Our Children’s Ministries – If you like working with 4th and 5th graders, come join us on our journey through the New Testament. This is an opportunity to really get to know the life of Jesus, and share it with our upper elementary students. We’re looking to add to our Kindergarten classes – and we’d love to have you lead these children. All materials, lessons, and resources are provided to you, and you have 45 minutes to share the word of God with our youngsters. To learn more about these opportunities, please contact Debbie Lisk using the staff e–mail page.
Fall Adult Ed Classes Begin with What Makes You Tick? What Makes Them Tick? facilitated by Dr. Jonieta Stone. The class will meet in the Chapel library at 8:45am on Sept. 12 and at 8:45 and 11:15am on Sept. 19 and 26. This series of three interactive workshops will provide insights into what energizes us, how we use or ignore our feelings when making a decision, and why some of us are early to appointments and some of us aren’t. Based on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator, you will come to understand four dimensions of personality behavior. Come and enjoy! It will be fun.
Women’s Book Group – will open the upcoming reading year on Monday, September 13, at 10am in the Chapel Library with a discussion of the book The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. The October book selection is Cutting for Stone, by Verghese. Call Sue Larson at 480.585.9141 if you have questions.
The Thoughtful Christian article for September is Was America founded as a Christian nation? Many churchgoers are confused about this topic and with good reason. Unfortunately, those who dominate our public discourse often add to the confusion. Former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said on the campaign trail that “most” of the fifty–six men who signed the Declaration of Independence were clergymen. In fact, there was only one member of the clergy who signed the Declaration and that was the president of the College of New Jersey, John Witherspoon. This article is available free of charge in the narthex of the Chapel and Sanctuary.
Stepping Up: A Journey Through The Psalms Of Ascent, facilitated by Shelly Core begins Wednesday, September 15 from 6–7:15pm in Fellowship Hall room 2. This 12 week video based study by Beth Moore explores Psalms 120–134. Traveling pilgrims sang these Psalms both on the way to the great festivals of the Jews and as key elements of the worship at those festivals. Students will interact with the Scriptures in new ways. They will gain a new appreciation for the life of faith as a journey to greater fellowship with and worship of God. Contact Shelly Core at snscore@msn.com with questions or to purchase the participant book at a cost of $16.
What Does Science Tell Us About God? Facilitated by David Schaller, this class begins Thursday, September 16 through Nov. 4 at 7pm in Fellowship Hall room 1. Science tells us that we live in a vast and ancient universe on a planet that is ideal for life. Does the ongoing evolution of the universe point towards a higher purpose and a creator? Although many scientists like Richard Dawkins have notoriously told us that God is nothing but a delusion, others such as NIH director Francis Collins, makes a case for the opposite conclusion. After reviewing the latest scientific discoveries about the origin of the universe and life on earth, we will explore the arguments for and against God within the framework of the common ground shared by science and theology.
Year Of The Bible – This week’s readings are Psalms 146–150; I Corinthians 15–16; 2 Corinthians 1–4; Proverbs 1–12. Contact Shelly Core at snscore@msn.com to join the group!
The Chapel is open daily for prayer and meditation. Worship service is held in the Chapel Sunday mornings at 8am.
