New to PPP: Parent Workshops

We respect that parents are a child’s first teacher and the idea that each adult has a valuable and unique perspective on children and these perspectives, blended together can aid both parents and professionals in discussing and problem solving connected with the emotional, physical, and intellectual health of children and families. We meet together once a month (same session is offered twice a month) for one hour to discuss early childhood topics. Drop your preschooler off at class and come join us for some discussions on relevant preschool topics.

The following is our schedule for the 2009–10 school year.

Please sign up in the preschool office for each session. Childcare will be available for younger siblings. Class fees are noted.

2010 Schedule

Raising Readers
Wednesday, Jan. 20, or Thursday, Jan. 21, from 9:15-10:15 a.m. (Fellowship Hall, Room 4)

As a parent, you are the best person to help your child get ready to read. By reading aloud often to your child you are building early literacy skills in letter recognition, learning letter sounds (phonological awareness), building vocabulary, and discovering the books your child enjoys (print motivation). In this presentation you will learn about best practices in Early Childhood Education that foster early literacy.

Presented by Sabrina Ball, PPP Director. Class Fee: $5

Music & Brain Development in Young Children
Wednesday, Feb. 17, or Thursday, Feb. 18, from 9:15-10:15 a.m. (Fellowship Hall, Room 4)

Research shows music training has more than a casual relationship to the long-term development of specific parts of the brain. Music brings out our emotion such as joy, happiness, love and tenderness. Music cultivates many skills such as concentration, listening skills, memory, coordination, builds vocabulary, improves motor skills and builds self confidence. When we make music part of our early childhood learning process children thrive.

Presented by Lynda Elliott, PPP Music Teacher. Class Fee: $5

Raising Children With God
Tuesday, March 16, or Wednesday, March 17, from 9:15-10:15 a.m. (Fellowship Hall, Room 4)

Parents are the most important teachers and nurturers of faith, and that can be daunting to a parent. Come learn some basic approaches for talking about God with your children and answering the spontaneous and difficult questions they pose.
